What’s new for 2019?

  • Advance Packet Pickup takes place for eight days, Saturday through Saturday, November 16-23, 2019 (Not all stores opened on Sunday)
  • Revised route utilizing more of Fort St., avoiding poorly maintained side streets
  • For those participants who do not pick up their packets in advance, you will electronically receive your race number before Expo opens at Noon on Wednesday, November 27th. Be sure to include your correct email address and cell phone number when registering
  • Increased signage for locating events and areas

What is a Wave Start?

Corrals (or waves of participants) are assigned by mile pace at registration.  Each corral is color-coded to match participant bib numbers. 10K and 5K races start at different times, each with five corrals.

Yellow                   8 minutes per mile and faster
Blue                       8 – 10 minutes
Green                    10 – 11:30 minutes
White                    11:30 – 13 minutes
Red                        Slower than 13 minutes & Walkers

We use your “chip time” (on the back of your bib number) for results.

How can I check if I already registered?

You will be notified by email when your registration is processed. Follow this link for runner lookup.

Will there be a new course for 2019?

We are not anticipating major changes to our course; however, we actively follow local construction projects and will notify participants of any changes to our course. Refer to this website, or follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for important updates.

Where and when do the races start?

S3 Turkey Trot 10K                                           7:30 am                 Griswold & Fort St.

BCBSM Mashed Potato Mile                          7:30 am                  Yzerman Dr., Waterfront behind TCF Center (formerly Cobo Center)

Stuffing Strut 5K                                               8:30 am                 Griswold & Fort St.

ALL races finish on Atwater, behind TCF Center, parallel to the Detroit River.

What should I know if I sign up for the Drumstick Double?

To run both the S3 Turkey Trot 10K and the 5K Stuffing Strut you should run fast enough to register for the yellow or blue corral (under a 10-minute mile).
All Drumstick Double participants (and only DD runners) will receive a PURPLE bib.

You will have to finish the 10K on Atwater, then walk/run back to the start on Griswold.
You receive your unique medal inside TCF Center, look for the Drumstick Double Awards Banners. DO NOT take a 5K or 10K medal at the finish line.

You MUST have your PURPLE bib to receive your medal.

NOTE:  If supplies permit, Drumstick Double runners may ask for an individual race medal in addition to the DD medal.  Please inquire at the Information Table in the Expo after the race. We cannot guarantee this second medal, nor whether it will be from the 5K or 10K race.

What should I know if I sign up for the Cranberry Combo?

The Mashed Potato Mile starts at 7:30 am on Atwater, behind TCF Center, and finishes at the same location.  The 5K Stuffing Strut starts on Griswold and Fort St. at 8:30 am (about 0.3 miles away).

Cranberry Combo participants will receive a special Cranberry Combo number bib. You will receive a unique medal inside TCF Center after you complete the second race. Look for the Cranberry Combo Awards Banners. DO NOT take a medal either time you cross the Finish Line. You must have your Cranberry Combo bib to receive the medal.

NOTE:  If supplies permit, Cranberry Combo runners may ask for an individual race medal in addition to the CC medal.  Please inquire at the Information Table in the Expo after the race. We cannot guarantee this second medal, nor whether it will be from the 5K or 1 Mile race.

What is a “packet,” when you talk about Packet Pickup?

For those new to racing, a packet means your number bib plus your race shirt. The S3 Turkey Trot offers Advance Packet Pickup at 10 locations around the metro area from November 16-23rd, in addition to pick up at the Turkey Trot Expo, November 27 and 28.  That includes race day.

Can someone else pick up my Race Packet or vice versa?

Yes.  At the advance pickup locations, you will need the name & zip code used at registration for any packets you want. Please be sure of the spelling and zip code accuracy for any pickups.  It speeds up the process to have names and zip codes written down when you arrive at the pickup location, especially if you are picking up more than one packet.

At TCF Center, you will need your bib number.  They will be posted alphabetically on the wall in the pre-registration packet pick-up area of Room E in TCF Center. (Look for the signs). There will also be a few computer kiosks at Expo where you may type in your information to locate your bib number.

Can I get the correct shirt size?

There is a size chart on the website with the online registration page.  Please refer to the chart before choosing a size.

Shirts are ordered months in advance of the event, based on estimates. Therefore, we may not have enough of every size available at every location on any given day. We advise you to pick your packet up early in order to ensure your size. We cannot exchange sizes at packet pickup locations. For the Drumstick Double and Cranberry Combo, you will receive one shirt.

Where do I find the race results?

Each bib includes a QR code (a computerized identification symbol).  If you have a code reader app on your smartphone (such as QR Droid or QR Code Reader), you may scan your bib and receive your results within an hour of finishing.  Or, you can ask one of our information volunteers to scan it for you. Results are posted online, after 4:00 PM at  and Links will be posted on the Turkey Trot Facebook page.

The 10K, 5K, Double and Combo are all B-tag timed (chip on the back of bib number).  Those participating in only the Mashed Potato Mile have clock timing.

Do you give awards?

We award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall for Men and Women in the 5K, 10K, Drumstick Double and Cranberry Combo. We also award 1st place overall Masters Male and Female in those same categories. We don’t give out age group awards but do post results online in 5 different age groups, so you can see how you rank against your peers.

Are there port-a-potties on the course?

Restrooms are on the first two levels in TCF Center. There is a limited amount in the starting area and along the course.

 Where should I park on race day? And what time should I get there?

We are working to provide the most convenient parking locations for our volunteers and participants.  We will post more information when confirmed.

Wherever you plan to park – GET THERE EARLY! That’s the best advice we can give. Arrive at your parking lot no later than 6:15 AM, no matter which race you attend.

Are there discounts at local hotels if I want to spend the night??

The Marriott Hotel Detroit at the Renaissance Center is the host hotel for the S3Turkey Trot. The block of specially priced rooms for Wednesday night sell out quickly.  A list of downtown hotels may be found on the Detroit Visitors & Convention Bureau site.

Do people really wear costumes?

Costumes make the race “The Parade before the Parade!” Wearing costumes is an honored tradition and highly encouraged!  Costume Judging will be located in the Cobo Center Atrium and take place between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM. Prizes will be given for Best Overall Male, Female, Girl, Boy, and Team (2+ people).

Do you offer Gear Check?

Yes.  You can check in your gear in the Gear Check area located in TCF Center Atrium adjacent to the Room E. We will not be responsible for lost or stolen items. You will receive a clear plastic bag for your gear. Any items for gear check MUST fit in that bag.  All bags are subject to a security check.

 Can I switch races?

If you decide to switch races after you have registered, but before race day, please email your change to If you already picked up your packet, also include your bib number.

Are strollers allowed on the course?

Yes, we do allow people to run with baby joggers or strollers in the slower waves (NOT yellow or blue), but we strongly request that you start in the back of the pack for your safety and the safety of others.

Can I run with my dog?

Because of course congestion and TCF Center not permitting animals, dogs (or other pets) are not allowed.

Are there any Age Restrictions for the races?

No. We do ask that young children be accompanied by an adult, even for the BCBSM Mashed Potato Mile.
